RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is pleased to announce the 12 grant recipients of the 2013 Student Science Enrichment Program.
The Student Science Enrichment Program supports diverse out-of-school programs with a common goal: to enable primary and secondary students to participate in hands-on scientific activities and pursue inquiry-based exploration. Recipients of the SSEP awards are selected by an external advisory committee and approved by the BWF Board of Directors.
Since 1996, BWF has invested nearly $25 million in hands-on science education programs across North Carolina reaching more than 37,000 students through 174 awards to 80 different North Carolina including nonprofit institutes such as public and private schools, universities and colleges, museums, and community/science organizations in North Carolina who are eligible for SSEP awards.
"We are pleased to provide opportunities for so many students to discover the joys of science in rich learning environments," said Dr. John Burris, president of BWF. "The award recipients will receive more than just financial support. They will join a network of organizations across the state dedicated to bettering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education in North Carolina."
The program's advisory committee reviewed 109 applications for award cycle. Funding for the 12 receiving grants amounts to $1.8 million.
