PROJECT TITLE: PREPARING FOR MY FUTURE "FULL STEAM (SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING ARTS MATH) AHEAD"

PREPARING FOR MY FUTURE: "FULL STEAM AHEAD" We believe our college student mentor model will continue to positively influence traditionally underserved and underrepresented middle school students. The use of college students as role models for 48 youth during each summer camp, will continue to have great promise. Most notably, our program will affect perceptions of learning and specifically, that of science and mathematics. Using robotics, cooking, rocketry, and other hands on projects, these are exciting ways to engage students and worthy of funding. Activities with university partners will help students see that education is both fun and exciting. * At the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, middle school GHCI scholars will expand their knowledge of agricultural sciences and animal husbandry. * At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, young scholars will shadow and learn from medical and dental school professionals. That includes CPR, mock surgery, developing dental molds, causes of cavities, and other clinical techniques. *At the North Carolina State University, young scholars learn the Engineering Design Process (EDP) and apply the EDP to several team projects while at NC State. They will also visit the Jim Hunt Library. * At North Carolina Central University, young scholars explore causes for diabetes, learn biomedical bioresearch techniques, learn how to code, write business plans and how to work effectively on teams.
