PROJECT TITLE: STEM AFTER SCHOOL

Led by a STEM After School Project Coordinator, the enhanced programs will engage students in activities aligned to Common Core and Essential Standards relevant to middle and secondary grades. Students wil have the opportunity to participate in hands-on, inquirybased science, technology and math activities, which will create and/or encourage interest in the sciences, while improving the overall academic performance of participants. Specific activities will include the Magic of Electricity, Vermicomposting, Embryology, Force & Motion, Ornithology, Archeology, and Building Engineering and Robotics. Additionally, FIRSTLEGO and FIRSTTECH teams will be supported on the middle school level and will compete in District competitions; while FIRSTROBOTICS teams will keep high school students further engaged. The program’s design allows participants to explore new skills, engage in problem solving and decision-making experiences, collaborate with project partners, discover their inner talents, and develop positive relationships with staff and each other as they travel along the path toward graduation, and career and college readiness. STEM After School program participants will receive activities including tutoring, academic and social enrichment and physical activities, along with the STEM-based opportunities. All program components are designed to reinforce what students learn during the school-day and to extend their knowledge. Anticipated outcomes include increased awareness of, and interest in, STEM related careers; improved academics; improved school attendance; and a reduction of behavior referrals.
