PROJECT TITLE: HICKORY DAY SCHOOL LEGO EDUCATION ROBOTICS CLUB & FIRST LEGO LEAGUE TEAM

The proposed project would supply funding to kickstart an afterschool robotics club focused on using Lego Education kits in our upper elementary and middle school that would also become a competitive opportunity to participate in the North Carolina FIRST Lego League (FLL) competition. As these would be new resources for our students, it's main purpose in the first period would be to prepare students and the club leader for future competition in the First Lego League (FLL) through instruction, guidance and practice with retired FLL game sets during weekly club meetings and competitions within our school community throughout the academic year. In the second period, students would continue to practice with retired sets within Hickory Day School, but we would also reach out to other schools in our area that officially compete in the FLL to hold intra-mural competitions to simulate official competition environments. In the third period, students would create official teams, register and participate in the North Carolina FLL competition. Pairing the skills needed to program Lego Education robotics kits with friendly competition would provide a valuable hands-on learning experience and opportunity where our students could integrate science, mathematics and technology in designing, engineering, programming and building robots to meet specific functions in real world contexts.
