PROJECT TITLE: APPALACHIAN APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY CAMP

The Appalachian Appropriate Technology Camp series will be offered for three, one-week sessions during summer, with follow-up sessions offered throughout the school year. Recruitment will target rising 3 - 8th graders in Watauga and Caldwell counties. The support and collaboration between the school systems, youth groups and homeschool networks will provide recruitment for students. The curriculum incorporates elements of Project Wild (Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies), Expeditionary Learning/EL Education, and the 4-H Experiential Learning Model. The Appalachian Mountains are one of the planet’s most diverse and at-risk ecosystems. The children raised in this unique environment are the upcoming caretakers and guardians of the western NC mountains. Through this camp series we are dedicated to instilling a passion and advocacy to ensure the future of the region. Through sustainable environmental and social practices students will be enriched in the possibilities of employment and entrepreneurship unique to rural mountain communities. Forest & Field Camp will expose students hands-on to the world of forestry and land management. Diggable Garden Camp will bring students into the depth of organic farming and wild foraging. Sustainable Tech Camp will bring students into the lab where they will be guided through building a drone as well as a soil testing and hydration system.
