The Career Award for Science and Mathematics Teachers is a five-year award available to outstanding science or mathematics teachers in the North Carolina public primary and secondary schools. The purpose of this award is to recognize teachers who have demonstrated solid knowledge of science and/or mathematics content and have outstanding performance records in educating children.
This five-year award presents opportunities for professional development and collaboration with other master science and/or mathematics teachers who will help to ensure their success as teachers and their satisfaction with the field of teaching. This is the third cycle of the program, which will be offered again in 2015.
The CASMT advisory committee reviewed 31 applications and selected and interviewed 10 finalists, their principals, and superintendent. Typically, five teachers are selected but due to the quality of the applicants and the strength of the BWF endowment, the committee proposed an additional candidate for funding, which the Board of Directors approved. The investment in the teachers totals $1.05 million.
“This year’s applicant pool for the career award was very strong,” said BWF President John Burris. “We feel privileged to be able to offer an additional award and feel confident that the recipients will continue to excel as teachers in North Carolina.”
BWF offers another teacher program called Promoting Innovation in Science and Mathematics (PRISM) Award. The award provides up to $4500 for materials and development of science and mathematics activities. BWF will begin accepting applications for the next PRISM Award in the fall of 2013.
