Message from Program Officer Alfred Mays
Dear Prospective 2020 SSEP Grant Award Applicants:
Thank you for your continued interest in the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Student STEM Enrichment Program (SSEP) grant award for the 2020 cycle. We hope that you are safe and well under these unusual circumstances.
We have made the difficult decision to NOT run a 2020 SSEP grant cycle given the Governor’s recent announcement of the closure of the North Carolina Public Schools for the remainder of the school year and the continued uncertainty of various precautions and directives for summer operations for so many organizations. Extending the current June 1 deadline for application submissions would begin to create schedule conflicts with the 2021 grant cycle that begins in December 2020.
Additionally, challenges resulting from the COVID-19 precautions are greatly impacting our active SSEP awardees across the state. Going idle with the 2020 SSEP cycle will give us the opportunity to address various issues and concerns with cancelled and postponed programming as well as alternate methods of STEM enrichment and exposure.
We remain sensitive to the limited capacity for which grant applications may be fully developed and completed based on various requirements within the request for proposals and hope that over the next few months, you would have an opportunity to focus on a possible 2021 submission.
Respectfully,
Alfred M. Mays

Dear Prospective SSEP Grant Award Applicants:
Thank you for your interest in the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Student STEM Enrichment Program grant award for the 2020 cycle.
We’ve continued to monitor the guidance and directives related to COVID-19 precautions and know that many of you are impacted greatly by the evolving circumstances. Most recently, the Governor of North Carolina has extended the closure of North Carolina’s Public Schools through May 15 and continues to provide strong recommendations on social distancing and reduced gatherings.
Many institutions of higher education, community colleges, and non-profit organizations have also established policies related to their teaching and learning programming. Additionally, local officials and agencies have communicated additional precautions given concerns and the impact within specific geographic regions.
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund understands and is sensitive to the limited capacity for which grant applications may be fully developed and completed based on various requirements within the request for proposals. In light of these circumstances, we are extending the current 2020 BWF SSEP grant application deadline to 4:00 pm on June 1, 2020.
Please continue to check our website for updates and changes to the 2020 grant cycle.
Lastly – A message from Dr. Lou Muglia, BWF President and CEO can be found here.
Our well wishes are extended to you, your family, and your community as we navigate the days ahead.
Respectfully,
Alfred
